Who was Sabito in Demon Slayer?
Sabito was an exceptional Demon Slayer and a disciple of Sakonji Urokodaki (previous member of the Demon Slayer Corps and the Water Hashira). Sabito and Giyu (the current Water Hashira) used to hangout and train together. And Sabito had all the abilities to become the Water Hashira. In the final selection, Sabito eradicated a plethora of powerful demons and even saved Giyu from a fierce attack. Nonetheless, the tides turned when Sabito encountered the Hand Demon, who was notoriously popular for taking the lives of multiple demon slayers in the past.
Sabito had a golden heart; he could have saved his life easily by dodging the Hand Demon. Instead, he put his life on the line and eventually sacrificed himself to save his friends. The incident left a huge impact on Giyu because he passed along with others, but his best friend lost his life in the process. Coming back to Sabito, his soul became restless, and most of the individuals who came to train under Sakonji saw his soul roaming around the training grounds.
Relationship between Sabito and Tanjiro
Remember when Tanjiro was training in Demon Slayer Season 1 under the former Water Hashira and he got in contact with a masked student who challenged him to spar, yes, that was Sabito’s soul. Tanjiro was in severe distress at that time because of his progress. Sabito then appears to tell the protagonist that he is weak and slow.
Tanjiro didn’t want to indulge in a fight with Sabito because he was worried that Sabito would end up getting hurt. However, Sabito declines Tanjiro’s concerns by saying that the latter can’t even touch him with his current skill set. Eventually, Sabito defeats Tanjiro and asks him to work on the teaching of Sakonji sensei. This moment had a great impact on Tanjiro’s journey as he started making extra efforts to become an unfathomable Demon Slayer.
Tanjiro Vs The Hand Demon
What happened next was nothing less than beautifully written poetry. Tanjiro kept progressing and sliced one of the largest boulders. And when he came face-to-face with the Hand Demon, we could see how mature he became while gaining strength. He remembered that Sabito got killed because he was reckless and avoided the same. With the help of the Water Breathing technique, Tanjiro beheaded the Hand Demon and provided freedom to the souls of the deceased.
Sabito and Giyu’s wish
Both Sabito and Giyu wanted Tanjiro to become the next Water Hashira. But destiny had other plans for Tanjiro. In the Demon Slayer Season 4 Episode 2, we see that Giyu denied Tanjiro’s wish to train him in the beginning because he wanted Tanjiro to be his successor. Giyu even denied taking part in the Hashira Training, which came as a shocker for other Hashiras.
Giyu and Sabito in Demon Slayer
Demon Slayer Season 4 Episode 2 deals with Giyu’s past and his transition from being adamant about not providing any training to agreeing to it. When Giyu understands that Tanjiro is not going to leave him alone until he explains why he could train, the Water Hashira decides to let Tanjiro have a glimpse of his past.
According to Giyu, he never passed the Final Selection and was only alive because Sabito sacrificed his life. Due to this, he defies considering himself as the Water Hashira. Tanjiro, after knowing the whole story, asked, ” Do you want to carry what Sabito entrusted you? ” That changed everything for Giyu.
Do you want to carry what Sabito entrusted you?
Tanjiro Kamado
Right after that, Giyu remembered Sabito’s slap when they used to train together. Then we get to see a glimpse of the past where Sabito is asking Giyu to carry on life for the people who sacrificed their lives for him. Finally, the Water Hashira agrees to participate in the Hashira training and take Sabito’s legacy forward.
Wrapping up
Even after having a very small part, Sabito played a major role in shaping the path for Tanjiro and Giyu. Things would have been much different if Sabito had been alive. In the third episode, we may get to see Giyu training Tanjiro and other students as well. That being said, it will be interesting to see the Hashira training process with Giyu as a part of it.
